Well….. 2014 has vanished like a tracer bullet into the dark of night, but what a year it was !!!
Here is a look at some of my favourite images from this year….
I would like to wish you all the very best for 2015, and may your shutters smoke with all the amazing sightings that you will experience !!
HERE GOES MY BEST FROM 2014….
While following the south pack of wild dogs, they took after some kudu, but did not realise that lions had been watching them, and it was all but too late for one of the dogs who got pulled down by one of the lionesses who mauled and bit the wild dog. We thought it was all over, but as the lions got bored with the limp body, they walked away, and at this point this dog stood up and shot off, much to the amazement of me and the lions…. HE IS STILL ALIVE TODAY !!
Servals are never easy to see, never mind get a good image of one. So I was very chuffed with this image before she disappeared into the long grass .
Wild dogs have got to be my favourite subject, and in Madikwe we get blessed with many incredible sightings, and this was the first of two kills featured here, where the south pack had managed to pull down a full grown wildebeest in the mud, and this is what made it unique for me… the contrasting colours of the mud and the vibrant reds of the blood that was spewing everywhere.
The mood of this image says it all, and the reflections of this scene added the contrasts I needed to create a cracker image !!… According to me anyway…hehehehehe !!
Capturing night time images is very difficult at the best off times unless you can get close enough for a huge flash to work. This image was taken from about 50 meters away from the subjects, so I was well impressed that I managed to get the settings right for this one.
Sometimes an image strikes you as something that won’t work as a natural coloured image… This one is one of those images which will look awesome on a big canvas somewhere .
Samson the young male leopard that made his presence felt this year gave us many awesome sightings, and this one just does something for me….
The colours here and the attentiveness of the dogs adds to the late afternoon mood, and the road leading away from there future travels takes you out of the frame as you follow them on the hunt.
Young bull eles playing is always entertaining, and here their trunks complete the motion in the image, and the focus on the eye on the right pulls you into their playful game.
There is nothing quite like the intense stare that a lioness exudes when she is focused !! here she sets off after a jackal that was getting too close to her hard earned meal…
For gruesomeness and pure adrenalin …. there is nothing like following a pack of wild dogs on the hunt, and be awed as they rip into their prey….
Nothing more to say about this image…. WHAT A CRACKER !
Samson again, as we managed to get right underneath him as he sat high in a leadwood tree eating his impala… grace and power come to mind here….
The 4 cheetah in Madikwe are such awesome subjects, but also difficult to capture their blistering pace when they are on the hunt… this one shows them as bookending the frame at a zebra kill
This time Samson killed and devoured a young jackal, but the intense facial expressions here as he was snarling at some mobbing crows did it for me here….
Must be the dust and the elephants all running away from the viewer that draws you to them, and makes you wonder why they are running…
I will end off with one of my favourite sunrise scenes at Inkwe pan one crisp morning….
SO…… I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO MEETING YOU ALL AT TUNINGI SAFARI LODGE THIS YEAR !!
ALL THE BEST WISHES GO TO YOU ALL FOR 2015 !!
